Watermark Ink & Chalking Technique

This technique will give you a beautiful, soft, muted look to your stamped designs. It looks particularly
well on nature designs, but will give any stamped design a more soft, toned down appearance.

1. Stamp image in watermark ink on regular card stock. (figure 1 - 2)

2. Use cotton balls for large areas or cotton swabs for smaller areas to apply chalk. Pick up a generous amount of chalk on the cotton ball. Lightly dust the chalk directly over wet ink. (figure 3)
For best results, use a very light touch when applying the chalk to the wet inked image. If you use too much pressure, you may not be able to remove all of the excess. A light dusting of the color may stay behind, even with the lightest touch.

3. When finished applying chalk, remove the excess chalk from the design on the card with a clean cotton ball. You can use a chalk eraser to remove any remaining extra chalk color. (figure 4)

4. Lightly mist with spray fixative. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Tips & Stamping Ideas

These samples use the cardstock from our "Country Meadow Sampler" 24 sheets of cardstock in 8 colors with 24 white bond envelopes for $5.95.

Most decorating chalks will work for this technique. Glimmer chalks will not.
Most of these cards were made using chalks from the 9-pc chalk set: #A306004.

Use chalk with watermark ink on shadow stamps or shadowed images designs. This technique will give you more options for soft, subtle coloring - and still allow you to stamp over shadowed images.

Attach a vellum overlay for an elegant look. Embellishments, such as eyelets or brads work great for a simple way to attach vellum.

Layers! Add coordinating accent colors of cardstock with layers. Measure and cut, leaving desired amount of space for next layer. Try offsetting the layers for a different look. Don’t be limited to traditional square or rectangular layers...Try using strips of cardstock for layers. Experiment with different layered looks and options.

Tear! Add torn pieces of colored cardstock to add interest to a simple card. Try cutting your layers of cardstock and then tearing only one side of the layer, or try tearing only the top and bottom of the layer.
