TYPES OF TAGS - HOW TO CREATE TAGS

Paper Tags:
You can purchase paper tags in various sizes and colors. There are two distinctive types of tags. Shipping tags are often found in manila color and have a straight cut top with a hole. Merchandise tags have a scalloped top edge and are often found in white.

Use a Tag Template:
There are many tag templates available.
You simply trace the tag from the template, cut it out, and use.

Stamp and Cut Out Tags:
We have made available a tag outline stamp in both types of tags,
which allows you to stamp a tag on any kind of paper and easily cut
out and punch a hole for the tag.

ATTACHING TAGS

Ideas for Attaching Tags to Your Cards:

  • Insert a brad (round or shaped) into the hole on the tag to easily attach directly to your project. (Example 1) Try attaching multiple tags with multi-colored brads for an interesting look.

  • Attach an eyelet through the tag to a hole punched on your project.
    (Example 2)

  • Attach an eyelet to the tag hole, then thread a string of fiber, decorative thread, twine, etc to attach the tag to the card. (Example 2)

  • Attach a tag very simply by using double stick tape or foam tabs. (Example 3)

  • Don’t attach a tag....stamp one on your project! Then create a mask and decorate around the tag.

Where to attach your Tags

  • Try a layout of three across a 4-1/4"h x 5-1/2"w card. You can layout in a straight line or stagger. (Example 4)

  • Use small tags and write
or stamp a word or image
sequence on the tag. Attach to your card in a row so that they line up
to convey your message. (Example 5)

  • Be creative, experiment! Try new or random locations for a piece of tag art. You can try attaching or stamping a single tag onto your project -- this is a good place to include a small phrase or image that you would like to stand out on your card.

STAMPING ON TAGS - TAG TEXTURES

  • For each style of tag there are Tag Texture designs. These textures fit on the tag. You can add a shaded area or a border to your tag. (See example 1)

  • You can create the illusion of a tag attached to a card by stamping the outline onto your project and then adding a color "layer" with a tag texture.

  • Tag textures can be stamped in multiple ink layers. Stamp or cut out a the tag outline, stamp a shadow tag solid image in a lighter color. Then stamp a texture over the shadow in a darker color. Finally add a phrase or image stamped over the first 2 layers. Be sure that your ink colors have enough contrast for each layer to show through. (See example 2)

  • Tag textures can be used to create interesting background on cards. Try using multiple ink colors or use a rainbow ink pad for a colorful effect. Be sure to pick colors of ink that compliment each other so that you will be happy with the results. For a shimmery look use Brilliance Galaxy Gold and Starlite Silver inks. (See example 3)

  • Outline the inside border of tags with metallic markers or gel pens. Use markers to put a unique handmade touch on the edges of the tag, such as slash lines or dots. (See example 4)

  • Experiment with layers on tags.
    • Tear the bottom edge of the tag after you have stamped
or decorated it. Then layer the tag onto your card.
    • Cut out strips of paper. Layer strips onto your card to create
different sections, giving you a grid-like area to decorate.
    • Cut small pieces of paper that can be used to layer onto
your tag. You can echo the tag shape or you can create
a mosaic effect with small pieces placed on a tag.
    • Tear small pieces of paper and layer them onto a tag.

TAG IDEAS: Books, Invitations & More!

  • Use your tags to hide a message or to make a cool invitation. (See example 1). Cut out two or use 2 of the same size tags. Decorate or stamp a special message or invitation details on one of the tags. Lay the tags on top of each other, with the special message tag on the bottom, then layer onto your card. Use a paper piercer or thumb tack to poke a hole through all three layers. Insert a brad to hold in place. This will allow your invitation or special message to be viewed by moving the top tag layer.

  • Tags can be stamped and layered with coordinating images. (See example 2) Stamp and decorate each tag, then attached to your card with twine, ribbon or raffia. Try using different tags sizes.

  • Tags can be attached to cards in groups using raffia, string, brads or eyelets. If using eyelets be sure not to have too many layers or to set too much. You have to allow enough room to be able to slide the tags to see what is stamped below. If you do not leave enough room when attaching or you try to put too many layers of tags, the tags will not be able to move.

  • Create a Tag Card. Trace a large tag image onto the front of a regular greeting card - make sure to place one side onto the fold of the card. Cut out tag shape and decorate. (See example 3, 4, 5)

  • Create a Mini Tag Book. Trace a few tags onto the folds of cardstock. Cut out and layer together. Attach tags to each other using string or staples. You can use a paper piercer to punch small holes in the fold, then thread your string through with a needle. (See example 6)

  • Tags that are cut on the fold may also be used as a layer on a card. You will then have a place to include a small note or secret message. Try placing the tag on the inside top panel of the card, which generally is left blank. (See example 7)
